Much Too Much Of... (A Comprehensive List)
I've been wanting to post this for awhile, but I figure I'd let ideas come to my head because this list can continuously be added onto and will probably be reposted every so often. This is a comprehensive list of types of people there are too much of at the University of Michigan. Spread the word to your UofM buddies so we can keep the school poser free and keep our environment clean from fakeass POSs.
Types of people there are too much of at Michigan:
Stupid people
White people
Asian people
White people who think they're hard
Asian people who think they're hard
Black people who feel the need to become activists because they're black
Not-hot girls
Guys who think they're hard because they work out
Guys at the gym who wear tight clothes
*I would like to expound on this. Every time I go to the CCRB weight rooms, especially the free-weight rooms, I walk in to a multitude of males wearing wife-beaters and other various types of tight clothing, trying to show off their muscles. But to who? To other guys? Seeing a female is a disparity of a rarity, and seeing a good-looking female in there has less of a percent chance than Saddam Hussein escaping from prison alive. Most of these guys who like to show off their "guns" have "guns" that are mostly fat, not muscle, and I find these guys to be a joke because they're showing off exactly the opposite of what they intend. If you're gonna wear tightass clothes, have ripped arms like me or Brad or Dan Rohlman before you make that call. I don't wear tight clothes to the gym, one because I disapprove of this type of people, and two because you're supposed to wear loose clothes to the gym anyways. If you ask me, there's too much testosterone in the gym that equivocates to homosexuality. Buncha fucking fruitcakes.
Hardcore overachieving overly-ambitious cutthroats
People who cry when they get B's
People who get ultra-stressed out from school
Underachieving slackers (I am among them)
People who are content with C's
People who don't stress enough about school
Pre-med students
Indian Pre-med students
Engineers
Asian Engineers
FOBs
FOBs who think they're hard because they're FOBs
FOBs who smoke cigarettes in an attempt to Americanize themselves (I haven't seen one who doesn't)
People who think they're hard because they drink a lot
People who think they're hard because they go wasted to work and school.
*Honestly, you people aren't cool. You're just retarted. Whenever someone tells or IMs me "dude I got sooooooo wasted last night and went to class soooooooo hungover" I simply shake my head because I hold no revelry for them. The problem with college is that it's personified as a party atmosphere and many times all people look forward to is the weekend, the next party, the next keg, and the next blackout. It's frankly shocking how high people hold alcohol in regard, and it's one of the problems with America. Don't get me wrong, I'll crunk my ass off when the opportunity arises, but I don't brag about how wasted or drunk I got or how close I was to death. I'd join the army if I wanted to do that. I just find it ridiculous to see the amount of people whose sole purpose is to get trashed over the weekends
On the same token, stoners
Hippies
Hippie GSIs
People who think they're hard because they're smart
People who think they're hard because they're intellectual
People who think they're hard because they're rich
People who think they're hard because they're rich and don't have a job (see B'sC2F)
People who think they're hard because they're rich and take money for granted
People who think they're hard because they're pseudo-semi-athletic
People who think they're hard because they play a lot of pick up basketball
Frat boys
Frat boys who think they're hard - can this get any more blatant? They're termed "jagbags" by Alan Moy
Frat boys who think they're exclusive - well, they are, but certainly not in a good way
Frat boys who MoyBoy17: they need 3 greek letters to reinforce their confidence
Guys with frat boy mentality who aren't in one
*There are obviously exceptions, such as the bros I personally know in frats, but the rest fit these categories
Feminists
Feminists GSIs
GSIs who have no clue what the fuck is going on (I haven't had any but I've heard stories)
GSIs who are angry at their inadequacies and take it out on their students' grades
New Yorkers/Englanders/Long Islanders
New Yorkers/Englanders/Long Islanders who are stuck up and are strong willed in all the wrong ways
J.A.P.s (NOT the derogatory term for the Japanese)
Girls who wear Uggs
Style fags
People who ride bikes in the snow
Athletes that used to be good but no longer are (ahem Henne)
People who join a volunteer charity organization to meet girls or to put it on their resume, ignoring the principles and purpose of that group
People who think they're politically savvy when they don't know shit
People who affiliate themselves with a political party and don't know shit
People who don't know shit about politics
People who don't know shit about anything
Affirmative Action supporters
Girls with "morals"
Girls with nice bodies but gross faces
Girls with nice faces but gross bodies
Racists
Know-it-alls
People who are outspoken but don't know what they're talking about
Thanks to all who contributed, and when polling I found that "Jews" happened to be the most common answer, second "Asians", third, "New Yorkers", fourth, "foreign kids", and fifth, "girls who wear Uggs". More to come soon, if you've got anymore let me know.

I don't want to break the train of your writing--I enjoyed scrolling down your blog--but what are Uggs?
Michigan Alumnus living far away from the northern snows.--not in Florida, but closer to the equator and about a stone's throw from the Janjaweed--whom you'll have to learn to villefy if you want to get paid to write like Krautheimer and Friedman, and that strikebreaker, Mich Albom--is the Mich Albom sports writer the same one who wrote the corny books that are selling even here?
vilify, my spellchecker tells me
Well I have a lot to say, but I guess Im not sure how to put it...
but
I would like you to know that you pretty much listed everyone who attends UM. So apparently UM is posers.
Im actually offended by the "Not-hot" girls, whether Im part of it or not, thats your opinion...but frankly this list doesnt make you any better then the poser asshole frat boys.
and honestly, this brings you down a few notches...
Have some balls and leave a name motherfucker....quit tryin to be something your not and write normal
on the first two comments:
wait what?
uggs are furry, ostentatious boots that girls with "high class" wear to show off how much money they have. check em out at www.uggs.com
i already do vilify the janjaweed and all that's happening in darfur, but unless i join the navy seals i honestly don't see how i can impact the situation. yes, i can bring more awareness to it, and yes, if i ever hope to reach the heights of krautheimer, friedman, and mitch albom (kinda strange to put a sportswriter among the ranks of a nobel prize winner) i'll have to write about serious topics, but this is a blog of my experiences in college. i'm building up my writing skills and to a lesser extent, my repertoire, covering things of immediate interest to myself. yes, the actions in africa piss me off whenever i think about them, but i honestly don't know what good it'll be because people watch the actions on the news everyday and no one does anything. as long as the US military is in the middle east i'm afraid to say little to no attention will be paid to the genocidal actions in africa, as seen throughout recent history. even if it was peacetime the US probably still wouldn't go there, as seen during the clinton administration. it saddens me that the US government has no interest there simply because there are no natural resources, and they will not take action for the sole sake of humanitarian aid. but policies are policies and i can't do anything about them. i'm a college student, and college students are placed into a bubble, in which the outside world is generally cut off. as important as those issues are to me, i have to focus on things that i believe i will hopefully cover in the future as a journalist. at the same time, i have to play the role as the storyteller, since most of my readers are my friends and fellow college students. while they also may hold the issues you speak about high in regard, they would much rather see issues covered about sports or college. there comes a point when the writer must think of themself first over the world, and as a communications major i realize that the media tends to go for the more sensationalized topics rather than others that may be more important. because ratings are important and if i write about things my fanbase isn't interested in then i'll lose traffic. you as an alum should know as much, and so i'll leave it at that.
and yes, mitch albom wrote tuesdays with morrie.
on the third comment, i'm wondering why you're offended by the "not-hot" comment. apparently you go to michigan, and michigan has a statewide reputation for not having hot (i DID NOT say there weren't any, and there are a multitude of cute girls at UM) girls, especially when compared to michigan state. such a reputation is supposed to come from a strong academic program. if you go here and you don't know about this rep then i ask what spiderhole you've been hiding under, because it's working better than saddam's. this article was meant more as a light-hearted observation of the school, and i even noted that i was a member of some of the groups listed. and on your comment on me being just as bad as the "poser asshole frat boys", just as you said to me, you're entitled to your own opinion, and honestly, i'd rather stoop down to a lower level to kick someone in the teeth. i'm the type of guy who doesn't buy into that bullshit when adults say, "don't stoop down to their level, be a better man and walk away, turn the other cheek, etc." if someone offends me i can take it to a certain point, but when that fine line is crossed it's my turn. i'm the type of person that believes in hammurabi's laws, in an eye for an eye, and that douchebags who piss people off should get their own in every respect. so if you think i'm just as low as the frat boys in terms of pissing people off, then i take that as a compliment, thank you very much. i know the majority of people agree with me.
thanks to B too for the backup.
ALL YA'LL MOTHA FUCKAS AH JUST JEALOUS OF THE K-TRAIN, EAT SHIT ANONYMOUS!!!!!!
HAHAHAHA
"this actually brings you down a few notches"
What, did ken lose experience points? Is he that much further away from hitting level 24? If you can't handle ken's satirical list about the diversity at Michigan then you sould take your fake "liberal" ass home, bitch.

Once again I don't want to break the train of your writing--I appreciated your reply, although it made me wonder to myself how north American writers will fare at expressing themselves "between the lines," as has to be done under censorship. Just for historical comparison with the backbiting Maureen Dowds and Judith Millers of today, you might glance at this quote from Steele-- who, along with Addison, was really the first journalist--in The Spectator of 1711, which, from the looks of it was before plantation slavery was at it's high point, I guess. They also had no prejudice against Arabs. In fact they were still close in time to when Arab philosophy was the founding philosophy--Avicenna, Averroes, Rhazes--of the great universities (Bologna, Sorbonne, Oxford) that all later universites modeled themselves on.
"I have shewn in a former Paper, with how much Care I have avoided all
such Thoughts as are loose, obscene or immoral; and I believe my Reader
would still think the better of me, if he knew the Pains I am at in
qualifying what I write after such a manner, that nothing may be
interpreted as aimed at private Persons. For this Reason when I draw any
faulty Character, I consider all those Persons to whom the Malice of the
World may possibly apply it, and take care to dash it with such
particular Circumstances as may prevent all such ill-natured
Applications. If I write any Thing on a black Man, I run over in my Mind
all the eminent Persons in the Nation who are of that Complection: When
I place an imaginary Name at the Head of a Character, I examine every
Syllable and Letter of it, that it may not bear any Resemblance to one
that is real. I know very well the Value which every Man sets upon his
Reputation, and how painful it is to be exposed to the Mirth and
Derision of the Publick, and should therefore scorn to divert my Reader,
at the Expence of any private Man."
The Spectator, Volume 3, December 31, 1711
...but of course all this has nothing to do with U-M. Don't mind me. Keep writing!
anonymous again. I, =3011 posted the complete December-31- 1711-entry from the Spectator, a bit apprehensively because I have to write under censorship myself--not for the reasons you might think...over there on the other side of the Atlantic.
I really almost went bizerk this afternoon when I couln't get through to the U-M server. Couldn't even see umich.edu--although I could go to yahoo and Bibliotheque National de France and all over, but not U-M. It turns out they were just putting Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" on the servers over Christmas break.
I hope you will pause to question your Krauthiemerian views of Darfur. Perhaps the hosing down--à la Montgomery Alabama--of the Sudanese immigrants in Cairo today will help you at least see the Sudanese reason for not wanting to let the oil-rich Darfur be split off to Exxon Mobil.
What a paradox--"a most unfortunate paradox," as the Gilbert and Sullivan Society performing Pinafore would say--that these slick mouthpieces of orthodoxy like Krautheimer, Friedman, and Dowd are hidden from the hoi polloi, behind their paid subscriptions to Times Select. I guess it is supposed to make us feel that what they say is true because it is hard to get.
What a nostalgic feeling of relief it was to see the Michigan Daily on line, when I couldn't get anything else at U-M!
your respectful, faithful, aging Michigan alumnus
3011,
Thanks for the reply and for giving a psuedonym so at least we'd be able to establish some form of contact. I also have a University of Michigan friend from Saudi Arabia named Karan Seth, just wondering if you knew him.
You'll have to forgive my friends for their harsh words. They, as well as I, initially thought you were just another college student being critical in the wrong ways, but now I can clearly see that isn't the case.
I appreciate the conversations we've been having, and I would appreciate it if we had more because not only does this enrich my mind, it keeps me up to date on the most current world events and also gives me an outlook from a perspective across the ocean. It also gives me an opportunity to write on a more professional scale than I'm used to and which I must become accustomed to if I want to go into writing as a profession. I must admit, however, I'm finding myself continually trying to catch up to your thoughts. I don't know how old you are nor will I ask, but you are obviously wiser, more knowledgeable, and intellectual than I am. I still have two and a half years to go of undergrad (more if I go grad school for journalism), and I'm still developing my higher thinking and critical analysis skills. While I recognized Krautheimer and Friedman from your past comments, some of the people you've recently mentioned are only vaguely farmiliar or I don't know at all. I'm also not current on some of the events you speak about, or about history in general, so you'll have to forgive our knowledge gap.
Because I'm from America, and because freedom and freedom of speech are the basic principles of our foundations, we value freedom of expression as one of our highest. Censorship is also an important aspect of our society, especially with our outrageous media, but we censor obscenities rather than critiques on certain individuals. Being from another country, you obviously must know the heavy criticism and sometimes downright odium many American citizens hold for President Bush (wrongly and misinterpreted I might add), and I understand this freedom isn't allowed in many countries. Many countries' governments don't allow journalistic questioning or critiquing of important people, and I know that those who do challenge that authority wind up dead or in prison. Nelson Mandela and even Muhammad Ali (though in America) come to mind.
While this American journalistic uncensorship may be unhealthy to the government, it is necessary as a non-governmental check and balance, to let the hoi polloi, as you stated, know what's going on in the upper reaches of America's political structure. Without this freedom of speech and of the press the world wouldn't have journalists such as American Kevin Sites, who filmed a Marine killing a wounded Iraqi insurgent in a mosque. The footage was shown on national and worldwide television, and though Sites is now considered a traitor to the US military (an enemy I would never want to make) he's received countless praise on his ethical and moral choices (check him out at http://hotzone.yahoo.com or http://www.kevinsites.net). Without him thriving in America's system and without an American network in NBC airing the film, such injustices wouldn't be known to the world. American journalistic uncensorship allows insight on other nations that might otherwise not be available since those countries lockdown their media with a vise-like grip.
So as long as America is a superpower, we will not have to worry about writing "between the lines" or under censorship, and frankly, I believe this is the best system out there, as displayed by such publications like Time, The New Yorker, and Sports Illustrated.
In terms of your quote from Steele, while I believe it is a person's individual responsibility to limit outrageous, wrong accusations (i.e. supermarket tabloids), there comes a point when the plain truth is that someone is obscene, and thus they must be displayed as such. The whole point of the media is to uncover truths (though not always 100% true I admit) and display them to the masses, regardless of how obscene or immoral those truths may be. Is it wrong for a parent to wish death upon a child killer or rapist? Journalists are people too at their core, with personal feelings and emotions, and opinionated writing often makes the best. Isn't that the point of blogging?
The truth takes precendence over morals, and hypothetically, I would rather learn that the American government set up 9/11 instead of believing the entire time it was someone it was not. Because the truth is the truth, and it either is or it isn't. Media and journalism is about personalization, and covering the people and their faults is a large part of what the mass media does.
I understand that you may be critiquing my making fun of people at UofM, but as I stated before, it was just a humorous outlook on the University. I didn't name any individuals except for Chad Henne (deservedly so if you saw the Alamo Bowl) and I wanted people to realize if they fit into any of these cliques, and to stop if possible. I'm doing investigative and analytical work on a smaller scale, and though it's making fun of people I think it serves a higher purpose than just that. How high I really couldn't tell you, that's your opinion.
In terms of oil, I honestly believe that as long as oil is available, people will flood to it. Aside from water and ozone, it's the world's greatest resource, especially since it's in limited supply. However, I don't believe this is all America's fault. If OPEC would loosen the reigns a little and give us some relief then we wouldn't have these continuously fluctuating prices that frustrate anyone with a need for gas. And on a lesser note, though you didn't mention it, I agree with people when they say we invaded Iraq for oil, though I don't agree with their perspectives. I believe we invaded Iraq first to stop Saddam, a genocidal dictator maybe not with weapons of mass destruction, but definitely with weapons of destruction. Second we wanted to implant a democratic government, not just for the good of the people, but so they would be more friendly and therefore more willing to sell us oil. I don't believe we invaded the country to steal oil, and that's what most people think. Of course countries are going to be hesitant to place their oil on the market, because it's such a precious resource nowadays and will become even more so in the future. I do however, think Sudan could offer at least a portion of theirs on the market to give themselves some monetary relief and maybe to help fix some things gone wrong.
I understand your comment on the public's mindset being warped from reading certain "high class" publications and thinking they are the information giver supreme, and I am studying such effects now as a communications major. Unfortunately, because money rules the world, these publications won't publish this sort of information because they'll lose money, ratings, support, subscriptions, and most of all, power. Those are thingss they can't do without, and something no man would want to give up willingly.
That's all I got right now, I'm pretty burnt out, until next time.
Ken
Nice idea with this site its better than most of the rubbish I come across.
